You can help get funding for the Emmaline Anna-Maria McKenzie play area in Frostburg. Voters can go to www.refresheverything.com and search emmaline.  They can vote everyday until July 31, they need to be in the top 10 to win, but if they are below 110, they are automatically resubmitted for Aug.  Pepsi is giving away the grants every month until the end of the year. Here is what was listed on the Pepsi website. The Emmaline Anna-Maria McKenzie play area will provide the children of Frostburg a way to pretend play that they may have never experienced.  The idea is to create a village of buildings, such as a movie theatre, or ice cream shop.  Organizers would like it to be a beach theme because Emmaline loved the beach. They have already purchased a beach trolley to be the center of the village.   In addition, we would like to create a garden area in which all the citizens of Frostburg would be able to enjoy.  She also loved butterflies, so we would like to plant items that attract butterflies.  Their hope is that the schools in the community would be able to go to the playground and use the items as an educational tool. They really want this to be a very special place, not only for the community of Frostburg, but also for those who knew this speical little girl can go and peacefully remember her.  They hope that this will give the children many years of joy." In 2007, Emmaline,3 years old, was killed when a rock went through the windshield of her dads car and struck her in the head. This project, started by a group of our friends, is in her memory.

August 4-7 The Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association 109th Convention is planned for August 4-7, 2010, in Hancock, Md. The annual convention expects to draw approximately 200 people from New York to Virginia and is hosted this year by the Hancock Volunteer Fire Company. The Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association (CVVFA) annual convention includes a golf tournament at Whitetail Golf Resort, meetings, training, a memorial service, and a picnic. During Friday’s Presidents Council Meeting, leaders from all the state firemen associations get together to discuss what is going on in their respective states. A banquet on Friday night includes the installation of new CVVFA officers. The convention concludes with a parade in Hancock that begins at noon on August 7. In 1901, fire chiefs from the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia met in Chambersburg, Pa., for the purpose of adopting a uniform hose coupling and to develop a mutual aid system along the Cumberland Valley Railroad. Stretching from Harrisburg, Pa., to Harrisonburg, Va., the Cumberland Valley Railroad served as an artery for trade between the four states through which its rights-of-way traverse. The meeting was so successful that one year later the firemen of Winchester, Va., invited all of the firemen in the region to attend demonstrations and an organizational meeting for a new organization, the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association. Today the CVVFA has evolved into a family friendly organization, fostering an environment where fire service members and their families can socialize during meetings and conventions. The CVVFA boasts an individual membership of over 1100, with another 100 organizational members on its rolls. A number of career firefighters are proud members. The leaders of the CVVFA are elected by the membership, with Officers and Directors representing the five Mid-Atlantic States where the CVVFA is registered to do business. The CVVFA is a home to all who value fire service progress and the strong bond between firefighters everywhere. The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is providing welcome packets for the convention attendees. The CVB is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help attract visitors to Hagerstown and Washington County. The CVB helps to create vibrant growth for the local economy by promoting, developing, and expanding the local visitor industry. There is nothing like it!  If you or your organization has been associated with a Mission of Mercy - participated in one – you no doubt have captured the passion. Two days of absolutely free dental care to all who come leaves most volunteers and patients with a changed perspective on the goodness of mankind.  “The largest free dental clinic in the world!” “A life-changing experience!” “For me, an experience of a lifetime!” Thousands come, standing in snow calf-deep for hours, waiting in quarter mile lines in one hundred degree weather, sleeping outside entrances on below zero nights, all just to receive dental care.  These are the underserved- those who cannot for whatever reason afford quality dental care.  Their need has been defined at each and every MOM event held, whether it be in Virginia, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado, or Nebraska.  And, this year Cumberland, Maryland will hold the first Mission of Mercy in the state of Maryland! The need is there and through the generosity of dental professionals, dental technicians and lay volunteers, and the charitable work of dental agencies and organizations throughout America, those needs are being met. More than 600 volunteers are needed to help with this event. If you are interested in volunteering, contributing or receiving more information about the Mission of Mercy please email mwalker@allconet.org or call 301-722-2700. Will you help save a smile?
